Bay Metro Central Bus Station

Project Type: Remodel

Size: 2,201 square feet

Architect: Jeffrey Ferweda, AIA, NCARB

Completion Date: February 2025

Sedgewick + Ferweda Architects was engaged to provide architectural and engineering design services for the renovation of the Bay Metro Central Bus Station, a 2,475-square-foot facility located at 1124 Washington Avenue in Bay City, Michigan. As the primary transfer hub for Bay Metro’s bus routes, the station supports daily transit operations through its ticketing area, driver break space, and public and employee restrooms. The scope of work focused on modernizing and improving the functionality, accessibility, and durability of the facility through a series of targeted upgrades, including removal of the existing skylight and installation of a new roof system, expansion of the ticket counter area, addition of automatic ADA-compliant entry doors, refurbishment of the front canopy, creation of dedicated staff restrooms, and construction of a new canopy at the rear of the building for drivers. Throughout the design process, our team collaborated closely with Bay Metro staff to develop a clear program for the renovations, conducted a comprehensive site survey to evaluate existing building conditions, completed all necessary code reviews, and prepared final construction documents for review and approval.

Before - Ticket Booth Interior

The existing Central Bus Station had long served Bay City as an active transit hub, but many areas of the facility reflected the wear of daily use and operational growth over time. The ticketing counter, while functional, was tight for staff and limited the ability to comfortably assist riders during busy transfer periods. The main waiting area remained open and welcoming but showed signs of age, including worn flooring and finishes that no longer reflected the level of service Bay Metro strives to provide. Public restroom facilities were durable but dated, with stainless steel wall panels and fixtures that prioritized durability over comfort and appearance. Behind the scenes, staff spaces were equally constrained; the break room offered little more than a refrigerator, small table, and minimal storage, providing limited space for drivers and employees to recharge between routes. Outside, while passengers benefited from a large covered boarding canopy, there was no dedicated outdoor area where staff could step away briefly during their shifts. These conditions highlighted an opportunity to modernize the facility, improve the rider experience, and better support the transit professionals who keep Bay Metro running every day.

The renovation of Bay Metro’s Central Bus Station focused on modernizing the facility while improving the experience for both riders and transit staff. The redesigned ticketing area expands staff workspace and introduces a more open, functional service counter beneath the existing skylight, bringing natural light into the waiting area. Interior updates include new finishes and flooring throughout the lobby, while public restrooms were refreshed for improved comfort and usability. Staff amenities were also enhanced with a larger breakroom, two dedicated staff restrooms, and a covered outdoor area that provides drivers and employees with a comfortable space to step away between routes. Exterior improvements, including a new roof system and updated canopies, further strengthen the durability and long-term performance of the facility.
