Genesee Health Systems - 725 Mason
Size: 11,641 square feet
Project Type: Renovation
Architect: Jeffrey Ferweda, AIA, NCARB
Completion Date: 2015
Construction Cost: $1.4M
Sedgewick + Ferweda Architects provided architectural services for the expansion and renovation of the Genesee County Health Center at 725 Mason Street in Flint, Michigan. The project scope included the complete interior renovation of an 11,129-square-foot office building, originally designed for the Federation of the Blind, to better support outpatient healthcare services.
The interior was reprogrammed to improve privacy, efficiency, and patient flow by relocating offices and conference rooms to the perimeter and organizing exam rooms, treatment rooms, and dental exam rooms at the core of the building. New construction included metal stud and gypsum board partitions, doors and frames, ceilings, new finishes throughout, and energy-efficient electrical and mechanical upgrades. The exterior scope was intentionally limited, preserving the existing building envelope.
ScopE of work
Located in the City of Flint, the building at 725 Mason Street has long served the community and is part of a broader network of Genesee Health System facilities. Sedgewick + Ferweda Architects originally designed the building in 1964 and has remained closely involved with its maintenance and evolution for decades, providing deep institutional knowledge of both the structure and the surrounding campus.
The existing layout no longer supported the operational needs of a modern outpatient health center. The renovation required a thoughtful approach to working within an existing building while meeting current healthcare standards, improving patient confidentiality, and enhancing staff efficiency, all without expanding the building footprint.
The site
Our proposal focused on delivering a patient-centered, efficient healthcare environment through a strategic interior renovation of the existing facility. Drawing on decades of experience in outpatient healthcare architecture, the design prioritized improved circulation, enhanced patient confidentiality, and clear separation between public, patient, and staff areas to support coordinated care.
Sedgewick + Ferweda Architects provided full-service architectural design through construction administration, working closely with project stakeholders and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with healthcare standards. The result is a thoughtfully renovated facility that supports staff efficiency, improves the patient experience, and advances Genesee Health System’s mission to improve health and health equity throughout Genesee County.
