Sedgewick + Ferweda Architects partnered with UA Local 370 Plumbers + Pipe Fitters Union Hall in Fenton Township, Michigan to design a 7,705-square-foot addition to their existing Plumbers + Pipe Fitters Union Hall training center. The new addition expands the facility’s ability to host large gatherings and training events, featuring a flexible meeting space designed to accommodate up to 250 people at tables and chairs. Supporting program elements include storage areas, updated toilet rooms, and a fully equipped commercial kitchen to serve both daily operations and larger events. The design prioritizes functionality, durability, and long-term adaptability while complementing the existing facility.

ScopE of work

Located adjacent to the current training center, the addition was carefully planned to integrate seamlessly with the existing building and site circulation. The layout supports efficient access for large groups while maintaining clear connections between training areas, gathering spaces, and service functions. Thoughtful coordination of building systems and exterior relationships ensures the addition enhances the overall campus experience while supporting future growth and evolving program needs.

The site

Early in the process, the project team worked closely with UA Local 370 to help define a realistic project framework, including preliminary budget and scheduling guidance. Based on the defined scope, a target construction budget of approximately $1.5–$2 million was established, with civil engineering coordination included as part of the overall design approach. Through collaborative planning and strategic decision-making, the project positions the Union Hall to better serve its members, strengthen training opportunities, and support the organization’s continued leadership within the skilled trades community.
